It is so easy to get started and we were making our own films in no time. Then
as we played with it more we had a brilliant time adding sound effects and music
from the collection the comes with it. You can also add titles and text. Now we
are just starting to play with green screening effect which means we can change
the backdrop to anything we like - including video filmed on my phone!
The camera in the kit good for getting started quickly, an you can also use your
smartphone as a wireless camera so you can make some really high quality stuff.

I wrote a review of Zu3D a couple of weeks ago, but have now decided to write a
completely amended version of it. Why? Because the original review mentioned a
few problems we had been having with the software, and we have now moved past
those problems.

The reason we have moved past those problems is, quite simply, because of the
incredible responsiveness of the Zu3D team in responding to and solving our
issues. As a result of this, I can’t praise them highly enough in terms of their
customer support. It really has been excellent!

I teach Digital Media to students in the 10 - 13 years range. Every second year,
we focus on stop-motion animation techniques, with each small group of students
spending seven 90 minute sessions on the topic.

Until this year, we had been using iStopMotion in conjunction with another app
called iGlasses (which provides us with manual control over the webcams we use).
Unfortunately, recent OS versions (we are Mac-based) haven't allowed these two
apps to work together, so I had been looking for an alternative. After a decent
trial session of Zu3D, it seemed like a no-brainer for our purposes.

We have now completed a seven week cycle with our first batch of students, and I
must say I am very pleased that we moved from iStopMotion to Zu3D. A few weeks
ago, due to the issues I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t so sure. Now I am a
complete convert. In addition to the great customer support we have been
receiving, here are a few other things I really like about Zu3D:

- The interface is very kid-friendly, while sacrificing nothing in terms of
functionality
- The ability to layer multiple video and audio tracks provides great
flexibility
- The timeline displays the actual previous frame contents, rather than just an
indicator of those frames.
- Manipulating audio and video in the timeline is simple and intuitive
- The documentation is fairly comprehensive and easy to read.
- The ability to add text, sound effects and other post-production factors, even
though we still use iMovie for most of these things, makes for a very
comprehensive and versatile production package, as do the facilities for such
things as drawing on screen, chroma-keying, importing images (even png images
with transparent backgrounds - very cool) and adding “scenery”.

Are there any areas for improvement? Of course. I have yet to use any piece of
software where this hasn’t been the case. But to be fair, these things are often
subjective and come down to individual preferences in terms of work-flow. As an
example, I would like the ability to set defaults for most variables, or to
click and drag media directly from the desktop or other folder into the
timeline, rather than using an import function. But these are relatively minor
details in the greater scheme of things,

Before making the move to Zu3D, I trialled a number of different pieces of
animation software. I have to say that I found nothing that compares to Zu3D in
terms of being a flexible and comprehensive, easy to use, all-ages stop-motion
package. Let’s add to that the superb customer support and sheer value for
money, and Zu3D is a total winner as far as I’m concerned.

Could not be more impressed. Purchased as a gift for my 9-year-old in
anticipation of school shutdowns. Seemed like a fun indoor activity.

Software installation was easy - does not come with or require a CD-ROM, you
download from the web and then enter the code on the manual that is included.
Very good because many computers don’t have a CD-ROM drive anymore.

Using the software is super easy. Camera is decent for the purposes we are using
it, but it is not a particularly “amazing quality” camera. It has adjustable
focus, lens cap, integrated lights and an adjustable base - definitely exceeded
my expectations. The clay and backgrounds that came with the kit were a nice
addition.

I tested out the software and camera before handing it over to my son and I was
able to make a 10 second clip, plus add music, sound effects and voice recording
— all in less than 10 minutes. I love that you can save the video to your
computer or post directly to YouTube! Best purchase I’ve made in a while!!

Initially when I downloaded the 7 day free trial, there were issues with the
software (iOS) and I was very disheartened. However....... the team behind this
kit were absolutely superb in every way. Their contact was second to none and
they worked tirelessly to solve problems that I was having. As a result I
brought the full package with the web cam and haven't looked back! I have now
made a number of stop motion videos with the kids and a few more adult based
ones not for kids, to wind up my mates.
I have not had any issues with the web cam that just plugs and plays and those
that gave low reviews saying you can do the same on a free downloadable app.....
you clearly are not using this to its full potential.
As a Mac user, there are a number of apps that you can use to assist in editing
videos and adding in sound, creating .gip files etc, you just have to research
and find them. The options that are available included in this software are also
very very good.
All in all this is the whole package that when I was a kid I always wanted but
was always so expensive. Now as an adult I can re-live my childhood and bring my
children into the world of animation!
All elee I would say is watch and learn the tutorial videos, they are very good
if you stick to the rules as a way to learn the basics.

background of your animation, and replace it with a picture or a video by

add a foreground, or 'green screen' another animation over your current movie
and background! The possibilities are endless...

General Webcam Questions



My webcam doesn't work, what should I do?


The first thing to do is to check that Zu3D or Cloud Stop Motion has the correct camera selected.

You can choose which webcam Zu3D and Cloud Stop Motion use by opening the settings and selecting your preferred connected camera.

Zu3D Windows

Go to Settings > Camera Settings and choose the correct camera

Zu3D Mac

Go to Settings > Camera and tick the webcam you wish to use.

Cloud Stop Motion

Click on the camera icon on the left hand side of the screen to open the pop-out menu, then select the cog tab and find your correct camera in the drop down menu. (Our HD Animation-Webcam usually displays as 'USB camera')

If you can't see the webcam listed, please check for any anti-virus software which may be blocking access to your webcam.

If you can see that the webcam listed, but no image is displayed, please can you make sure that no other program is using it, for example Skype or a laptop's built in webcam software, and that any 'privacy' slide/cover located on the lens is open.

You can also try using the webcam in another program. On Mac you could try with Facetime, or on Windows you can download and use this Microsoft test utility AM Capture Download to see if your camera is recognised by your computer.

If you do see the image in AM Capture or another program, but it is still not working in Zu3D or Cloud Stop Motion, please contact us providing as much information as possible about your camera and any error messages you receive, we will do our best to resolve the issue and get you back animating!



Why is the picture from my webcam slow or laggy?


This can be caused by a Windows update breaking certain compression settings.

In Zu3D, try changing it by going to Settings > Camera Settings and clicking the 'advanced' tab at the bottom. Change the compression dropdown to something other than MJPG. Try YUY2 (if that's an option), or, if that's not an option, please just try changing it to something different from what it is on at the moment.If you are still having problems, please contact us and we will investigate further to help try and work out what the root cause of the problem is for you.



Can I use a digital camera or video camera instead of a webcam?


Our animation software packages need a live feed streamed to the computer to be able to capture an image. Unfortunately, most digital cameras do not offer this - unless they have a webcam mode (such as some high-end 'mirrorless' cameras).

Zu3D and Cloud Stop Motion are designed to work with any webcam - integrated or external. It is easy for you to import any pictures taken on your digital camera into Zu3D and Cloud Stop Motion, but you will not get the benefits of the live image or onion skinning, which are incredibly useful features whilst in the midst of animating!





How do I change the webcam Zu3D uses?


Changing which webcam Zu3D uses is a simple process of changing the settings.

Windows

Go to Settings > Camera Settings and choose the correct camera

Mac

Go to Settings > Camera and tick the webcam you want to use.

(Our HD Animation-Webcam usually displays as 'USB camera')






How do I change the webcam Cloud Stop Motion uses?


You can easily change which webcam Cloud Stop Motion uses by altering the settings.

Click on the camera icon on the left hand side of the screen to open the pop-out menu, then select the cog tab and find your correct camera in the drop down menu. (Our HD Animation-Webcam usually displays as 'USB camera')

How do I focus my Animation webcam?


Our HD Animation-Webcams have a rotatable, grooved black bezel around their lens. Simply twist this to focus - this can be done whilst connected and 'live' so you can ensure you are focused on the correct character/object. (It can sometimes be quite stiff to move, so may require some force to initially free it up)



My webcam still doesn't work even after checking all these questions, what should I do?


If you have checked through all the above and your webcam still doesn't work, it may unfortunately be faulty.

If you purchased the webcam from us, or inside one of our kits, please get in touch with as much information as possible, including you proof of purchase, so we can look to arrange a replacement if it is deemed to be faulty and still under warranty.

What devices can I use Cloud Stop Motion on?


Cloud Stop Motion runs completely within the browser on any modern device that is connected to the internet! As with most things, the more powerful your device, the better the experience. We recommend using the Chrome browser where possible, though other browsers are compatible - you can see a list here.



How much is Cloud Stop Motion?


Cloud Stop Motion is completely free to use, you only need to pay for your storage needs. We give each individual 500MB of free storage, which will give you enough space to get up and running and make a short film. You can then download that, delete from your account in the cloud, and start again on your next masterpiece, or choose to purchase access to addtional storage enabling you the ability to create bigger and bolder projects! You can see all the options by logging into Cloud Stop Motion and clicking the yellow 'Upgrade' link in the top right corner - but as a rough guide, we'd say enough storage for a keen individual animating at home with an HD webcam will cost as little as $25 for a year's storage subscription.

If you are a school or club looking to utilize our app, we are proud to advise that have a number of great value options for 'educational organizations'. Creating a free organization accounts allow you to manage an unlimited number of student accounts and groups. You'll immediately receive access to 2GB of free storage space to get your students animating, and then you can choose how much additional storage you would like according to your school size/animation ambitions.

If you log into your personal Cloud Stop Motion account and click on 'Schools/Organizations' link in the bottom right of the screen, you will be able to see a table of the different options - simply select your correct billing country located below the grid, and your appropriate pricing options will appear. As a guide, we say that an account with enough storage for approximately 30 students animating would be around $100 per year, and a larger organization account with enough storage for approximately 600 students animating would be around $600 per year - so proportionately cheaper. You can upgrade your allocated storage space at any point during your subscription period and only pay for the cost difference between the storage plans.

A top tip of ours is ensuring you remember that, once students have finished their projects, they (or you) can export their project as an MP4 file and download it to store locally, or simply export the movie directly into their Google Drive/OneDrive account, meaning they (or you) can proceed to delete the project, then empty the trash can, and free up the space the completed animation was using.

The amount of storage you need will depend on a number of factors, such as how many projects and exported films you are storing in the cloud (usually reflected by how many students are working on projects in the same term/time period), how many frames each animation contains, and what resolution the frames are being captured at.

3.Click Create Organization Account on the next screen.

4.Select the 2GB free account and enter your school/organisation details, click Create Organization Account.

5.You will then be taken to a page where you need to set a verification code for your account, do this and click Continue.

What is Claymation?





According to Wikipedia, Claymation, or Clay Animation, is 'a form of stop motion where charaters, or background items, are created from a malleable substance, such as plasticine/modelling clay ... which is then then photographed once before being slightly moved by hand to prepare it for the next shot, and so on until the animator has achieved the desired amount of film.'



The above in mind, would you believe us if we told you that the art of plasticine modelling has been around longer than the current oldest living person on earth!



There is some debate surrounding the origins of plasticine, with some suggesting it was invented in the 1880's by German Pharmacist Franz Kolb, while others say his ingredients created a more waxy/oily variant (also know as 'Plastilina'), and the modelling clay we animate with today more resembles the British Artist William Harbutt's version, dating to 1897.



Either way, that's some impressive lineage for a product which is responsible for the likes of Animation greats such as 'Wallace & Gromit', 'The Boxtrolls', and 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' (to name but a few!), some hundred years after its Victorian roots - and that's without even considering the quality and quantity of fun modelling clay still imparts on children and adults alike, to this very day!



So, what is Claymation you ask? In our opinion, Claymation is the most wonderful of art forms, which affords you incredible creativity, and the ability to express yourself as an animator in an all-absorbing environment you're unlikely have experienced before...!







But is Claymation truly accessible, to all ages and abilities?





It is our belief that, if you have the minimum knowledge required to load up and use our app, and you can make even just a ball out of modelling clay, then you absolutely can make your very own Claymation movie, whether you're 6, or 106! Just look at what was achieved with 'Morph' back in the 1970's!!



Ok, I'll submit that at either end of that age range, you'll probably want some help with bringing your ideas to life, but that's what makes for such a great, immersive experience when claymating at home or in the classroom!

If your computer doesn't already have .Net Framework 4.5.2 installed you can download it from Microsoft



I still can't get Zu3D to install what can I do?


If you have problems installing Zu3D and have installed .net framework 4.5.2 as above, then please get in touch with us and include any errors you receive. We will then investigate the problem and advise you what to do.



How do I install Zu3D on Windows XP?


Zu3D M is not compatible with Windows XP, you will need to use an older version of Zu3D version 3.0.089 which is an older version of Zu3D. Please get in touch if you would like to install this version and we will send you a link.



Installing Zu3D on a Mac with OSX 10.10-10.14


We have had some reports that the latest version of Zu3D will not install on some earlier versions of Mac Operating Systems (10.10-10.14). If you are installing Zu3D on one of these operating systems, please download and use this version of Zu3D instead



Problems activating Zu3D



My code has already been activated, what should I do?


If this is the first time you have installed Zu3D, it may be that your computer is not retaining the activated code due to the permissions on your computer. Please contact us with your licence code, we will reset it and send you instructions on how to activate ZU3D so that the activation is retained. If you have previously installed Zu3D and want to move Zu3D to a different computer, please send us your code, and we will be happy to reset it for you.



How can I transfer Zu3D to a new computer?


Your code allows you to put Zu3D on one computer at a time, if you need to transfer Zu3D to a different computer, please send us your code and we will reset it for you so you can activate Zu3D on the new computer.

How is Zu3D Installed on a network?


When you order a Multi-Platform Site Licence of Zu3D you will be sent an email with download links and your licence details.

Windows: Download the Zu3D Network enabler and enter your licence details from your licence details email to create an msi that can be rolled out across the network in the usual way.

Macs: Download the Mac package and roll out across your network.

iPads: Download the free app 'Zu3D Ed' to all your iPads, activate the app with your account name and code from your licence details email. If you have to activate Zu3D on a lot of iPads, you can download our small Licence Server program which will send the activation details to all iPads on the network, so you don't need to activate each iPad individually.



How can students install Zu3D at home?


If your school holds a Zu3D Multi-Platform Site Licence, students can install Zu3D at home. They will need to contact us with their school name and postcode, so we can create a licence for them, which we will send them along with instructions on how to get up and running with Zu3D.



Does Zu3D work on a thin client server?


Yes Zu3D works well using a thin client server. There are just a couple of things to be aware of:

You will need to make sure all the USB mappings are correct, so that Zu3D uses the right webcam on each computer.

Zu3D detects if multiple instances are running on the same PC and displays a warning message if they are. You can just click "OK" on the warning

message to run Zu3D without a problem, or there is a command argument you can

add to the short-cut to suppress this warning as follows:

"C:\Program Files\ZuLogic Ltd\Zu3D\Zu3D.exe"–nowarning



How do I install .net framework 4.5.2?


Zu3D needs .net framework 4.5.2 to run, if this isn't installed on your network already, you can download it from Microsoft



Zu3D Studio3 Questions



What is the difference between Zu3D M and Zu3D Studio3 (or Zu3D Original)


Zu3D M was released in 2016 and retains all the features of Zu3D 3.0 whilst being built for the future. Green Screening and Video Editing features have been improved and you can now use an iOS device as a remote camera.

Zu3D 3.0 projects and Zu3D M projects are not compatible between versions.



Does Zu3D Studio3/Original work on Windows 10?


Zu3D is compatible with Windows 10, and should install normally. If you encounter a problem, please right click on the Zu3D icon and click 'Troubleshoot compatibility' If you still encounter problems, please get in touch and let us know as much information about the error as possible.



Where is the media library stored?


This is for Zu3D Studio3 only (Zu3D M has the Media Library built in) where the Media Library needs to be installed seperately.By default, the audio library will be installed to:

C:\Program Files\ZuLogic Ltd\Zu3D\Media Library\

In the single-user (ie, non-network) version of the Zu3D software, this path can be altered during installation.

While it is recommended that the audio library is installed to the local PC, it is also possible to install it to a network share, either via a mapped drive or UNC path.



Zu3D Media Library Issues



Why are my Zu3D Media Library folders empty, even though they are present in the install directory?


This may be because you have an "N" edition of Windows, this does not include Windows Media Player and associated features that Zu3D requires. You will need to download and install the Windows Media Feature Pack. which you can currently find here for Windows 10.

Maths- Animation is a great way to consolidate knowledge. You can animate number bonds, multiplication facts, division facts; actually any of those facts that we just need to know! Animation is a fun and engaging way to ‘hammer home’ those elusive facts! Animating helps children retain fundamental mathematical knowledge! Not only is it fun to make, it is also fun to watch.

English - Animation is a superb way for children to demonstrate their reading and comprehension skills. Your class can make animations that will reflect their understanding of the text. Split the class into small groups (groups of 3 work well). To see individual understanding, get them each to make a storyboard first instead of collaborative group work. Alternatively you can purchase the Zu3D App (£8.99 / $9.99 approx) from the App Store on your iPad and use the inbuilt camera in your iPad.




However, by far the most popular way of buying Zu3D is by purchasing our Zu3D Animation Kit. This gives you everything you need to get started animating and makes a great gift. What is Stop Motion?


Stop motion animation is a film making technique which makes it possible for anyone to create their own animated films. The concept is simple; set up your characters, then take a photo, move your characters a little, take another photo, move your characters a little more, take another photo and repeat.






How do you make a Stop Motion?



The images you’ve captured are then played back very quickly - usually at around 12 frames (images) per second. As you are watching your brain magically fills in the gaps and your characters come alive!


Try clicking on the next button, to step through the frames of the penguin animation one by one, then press the play button to see the images played back at 12 frames per second.


This technique has been used in many famous movies, from Jason and the Argonauts, to Wallace & Gromit, the Nightmare before Christmas and many many more.


With minimal equipment and software required to get started, stop motion animation is a wonderful way for students and young people to make their own animated films.


These days it is easy to create a stop motion animation, there is a range of software that allows you to view your scene via a webcam or your device's camera, so you can see on the screen, the image you are capturing. You then move your character or the scene and you will see what is called onion skinning which shows you the last captured frame and the live image, this gives you a guide as to how much to change the scene for the next frame.


After you've captured some frames you can playback your animation to see what you have created, you can then change the speed of the animation, slow it down or speed it up, delete any mistaken frames. This means you can perfect your animation and correct any errors quickly and easily.


You can then add sound and music, speech bubbles and titles and credits to make your animation come to life. Once you have finished you can export your film and share with your friends.









What are the benefits of Stop Motion?






Creating stop motion animations is a great, creative activity, you can work independently or with friends and family and you can animate any topic. For example you could animate a story, a science topic, a historical event, a birthday poem, animation allows you to express anything in an interesting, novel way.
